New Zealand Police seized and destroyed approximately 141,000 cannabis plants during the 2008/2009 National Cannabis and Crime Operation (NCCO) – the highest number in ten years.
Taser use sees drop in deployment Since the reintroduction of the Taser to Auckland City, Waitematā, Counties Manukau and Wellington districts at the end of 2008 there have been 78 incidents where the Taser was used: 16 in Auckland City, 15 in Counties Manukau, 14 in Waitematā, 32 in Wellington and one in Waikato (which has no Tasers) where a Taser was sent from another district to assist in resolving an incident in the Waikato river. |

A Western Bay of Plenty Retail Crime Prevention Expo held in Tauranga in late July has given retailers valuable information on how to protect their profits by reducing the opportunity for criminal activity within their workplace. Working with commerce and industry Retailers, Private investigators, bankers, taxi drivers and the insurance industry were among those represented at last month’s Crime Partnerships Forum for industry held at the Police College. More than 1800 Western Bay of Plenty high school students received a hard-hitting drink driving message recently when they attended an Anti Drink Drive Expo organised by Blue Light Tauranga. |

| The Law Commission is currently reviewing New Zealand’s liquor laws and recently released an Issues Paper, ‘Alcohol in our Lives’. This paper has been of great interest to the public, industry and public agencies generating interested debate on the Commission’s preliminary ideas for law reform. |
