Dramatic drop in holiday road toll The Queen’s Birthday initiative to lower the speed tolerance to 4km/h coupled with a focus on slow drivers, high levels of alcohol testing and enhanced visibility across all districts saw a dramatic drop in the road toll over the weekend. Only one person died – the lowest figure for 54 years.
This month saw the appointment of Viv Rickard as Deputy Commissioner with responsibility for resource management.
Thanks to an excellent run of prosecutions of those responsible for ‘skimming’ and other bank card offences, the Auckland City District Financial Crime Unit has received the Visa International Law Enforcement Award. Facebook gets good intelligence Manurewa and Queenstown police stations are using Facebook pages to gather intelligence from their local communities. Electronic Crime Lab reunites student with stolen property When Detective Mike Scott asked E-Crime Liaison Officer Will Chamberlain to look at a password-protected computer he believed had been stolen, Mike had no idea the computer contained material critical to the thesis of PhD student Claudio de Sassi. Members of Wing 263 recently gave their solemn undertakings in a special setting at the Police Museum in Porirua. It was an early start for museum staff on 19 May when 40 brand new recruits took their solemn undertaking at the museum. |

New relationships forged with key groups Youth Services is using common goals to forge new national relationships with key education groups. Prime Minister John Key opened the new Youth Development Unit at Hobsonville Defence Force base on 4 June.
Youth leadership camp motivates For the first time in 30 years, New Zealand and Australian Blue Lights came together to deliver a specialist youth leadership programme to 40 teenagers between 14 and 16 years old. |

National forum to prevent crime Earlier this month Police signed up to a formal agreement as part of the Crime Prevention Partnership Forum (CPPF) – a newly formed group comprising police, industry and business interests. National role for Pacific champion Inspector Willi Fanene, newly appointed to the role of National Strategic Pacific Advisor to Māori, Pacific and Ethnic Services (MPES), is getting to grips with the policing needs of Pacific people in New Zealand. MoU promotes working relationship Police has signed an updated Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Housing New Zealand Corporation (HNZC). The entire MoU, which came into effect on 5 May, has been revised and includes four new schedules: |
