Police celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori

Police staff are getting involved in Māori Language Week (26 July – 1 August).

Māori, Pacific and Ethnic Services (MPES) National Manager, Superintendent Wally Haumaha says the week provides a great opportunity for staff to learn more about Te Reo and connect with the Māori community, and is a key initiative for strengthening Police’s responsiveness to Māori.

This year’s theme is “Te Mahi Kai – The Language of Food”. Government agency Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori (the Māori Language Commission) has deliberately chosen an activity-based theme to promote and widen use of the spoken language.

Staff are organising a range of activities focusing on introducing Māori words into the workplace, learning about the preparation of traditional Māori food and team building exercises at a social level.

Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori has a dedicated website for Māori Language Week 2010 at www.korero.maori.nz/news/mlw with a range of resources available.
