Kitten calls 111, refuses to speak...

Mitzi the cat

Who me? Mitzi, a 16-week-old Burmese kitten somehow called 111, much to the horror of her owners.

An elderly Hastings couple, the parents of a long-time Central Comms dispatcher, now know first-hand what their daughter Alison has to put up with in her job – thanks to their kitten.

In late June, Alison’s mother heard a voice on their home speaker phone and made a quick dash to see what was going on.

To her horror, she discovered that 16-week-old Burmese kitten, Mitzi, had somehow turned their speaker phone on, then dialled 111.

Mitzi was sitting by the phone pushing the buttons as the Telecom operator was saying, “111 Emergency, do you require Police, Fire or Ambulance?”

If Telecom don’t get a voice response they ask the caller to push buttons if they need Police.

The offending feline obviously enjoyed the beeping noise as she continued to push the buttons. Alison says her mum had a lot of explaining to do.

“Needless to say, my parents now put their telephone in a drawer when they leave the room unattended."

“I’m sure Mitzi must be the youngest 111 hoax call offender.”
